Vin d’Alsace . . . Cuvée Nature . . . Wonderful words that must mean the latest vintages from Domaine Durrmann have arrived. We are thrilled to offer as a case Yann Durrmann’s latest terroir-driven Rieslings — each a direct representation of their soil, including a new parcel over limestone. This is a rare opportunity to really taste through this part of Alsace, with four wines from one of the understated masters of the region, showing the impact of soil type on a single grape variety. The grapes were picked at more or less the same time and the wines were made identically: the fruit pressed directly to stainless steel tank and bottled just as fermentation completes, with no additions at any stage.

On Grés — compacted sandstone — the variety expresses itself with joyful fruit and pithy citrus aromatics. Immediately approachable, and very easy drinking

The sandy terroir of Granite expresses itself with more floral aromatics and a pleasant white-almond bitterness, becoming complex and long. Yann feels this is the most age-worthy of his Rieslings.

Schist shows the variety making its terroir apparent with a livewire acidity and snap, feeling chalky and mineral. A more tense style compared to the aromatic Grés and Granite, with white pepper and a very pleasing brittle tannin this year. This will also age very well.

And for the first time in the UK, we have Yann’s Riesling sur Calcaire 2023, from a limestone parcel he planted 10 years ago that is finally at a high enough yield for its own terroir cuvée. Yann speaks with curiosity about this wine to complete the set — “Riesling on Calacaire is new to me. The other soils I have been working with my whole life, so I understand these. I wouldn’t like to say definitively how Calcaire shows itself, I’m still learning. It’s certainly on the citrus, perhaps lime, but has more acidity and salinity than the sandy Grés and Granite parcels.”
