Tom’s Weekly Faves

This week's picks are a selection of lightly-macerated, juice driven pinks and reds for summer evening drinking. Light footed movers & shakers.

Mayga Watt 2019  - Gamay
What better way to kick start your evening than with this aperitif beauty from Marine Leys? Marine spent time behind the camera in film production and underwater photography before a change of path towards winemaking. Her love for work in the vineyard began in Turkey where a friend had planted vines. She later went on to learn her craft under the guidance of the legendary Plageoles family before taking on her own 5 hectares of vines down in Gaillac; South-West France. Gamay grapes spend a few days on the skins before bottling (unfiltered). Capped before the fermentation finishes to create a wonderful natural sparkler, filled with juicy summer fruits and a dry crisp finish.

Wildrosé Pur 2018  - Pinot Noir, Portugieser
Wowza! A recently arrived beauty from the Brand Bros in Germany kept me thoroughly entertained over the weekend. This funky little number will make you wanna air slap bass to George Clinton tracks all day long. For a while that will keep you entertained; but can, and will, really annoy the other person you live with (speaking from experience).  Incredibly fresh and easy drinking with a cranberry/wild strawberry nose and a savoury finish. A perfect accompaniment for a few afternoon games of sh*thead! The official scoreboard hasn't been knocked up in our house just yet.. but it's only a matter of time.

La Baleine Ivre 2018 - Gamay
Juicy gamay from Beaujolais! What more could anyone want? Easy drinking due to the whole-berry fermentation (or carbonic maceration as it is better known). This preserves the fruit's taste without extracting too much tannin from the skins. The best thing about wines like this is their versatility; comfortable paired with many dishes or easily (too easily?) enjoyed by themselves. I stuck mine in the fridge for an hour before opening for further refreshment on a warm day. Cyrille, the maker of these gluggers experiments a lot with different lengths of maceration. Look out for his other cuveés which are all equally enjoyable!

Have a great week, Tom
